Beah Avila

Beah Avila is a transfer student at Columbia University’s School of General Studies, pursuing a degree in Political Science. She was recently elected as a Policy Coordinator for the General Studies Student Council (GSSC), where she works to strengthen student representation and support initiatives that enhance the GS experience.

Before transferring to Columbia, Beah studied at BMCC, where she excelled academically and served as Vice President and later President of the Coalition Club. In this role, she led collaborations with campus and citywide organizations—including the Women’s Resource Center, Citymeals, and Gotham Park—developing programs that emphasized community engagement, service, and advocacy.

Beyond campus, she has also pursued professional experiences in marketing, PR, and project management, along with community-based work as a surf instructor and volunteer with Laru Beya, a nonprofit in Rockaway dedicated to empowering historically excluded BIPOC youth.

At Columbia GS, Beah aims to build on her academic interests in political science, economic philosophy, and sustainable development. As Policy Coordinator, she brings her perspective as a transfer and nontraditional student, committed to fostering inclusivity and strengthening connections between GS students and the broader university community.
